Acupuncture for Painful Periods

Acupuncture for Pelvic Pain

Are menstrual cramps normal? While they are commonly experienced, it is not considered normal for your period to cause severe pain or cramping. Living with painful periods causes dread of your monthly cycle, added stress, and often interferes with your daily life and work responsibilities. Why live with pain and cramps when you can experience relief with acupuncture!

Does Acupuncture help PMS?

Acupuncture for PMS is very effective and often creates significant relief within 1-2 cycles. PMS symptoms can include emotional dysregulation, breast tenderness, headaches, lower back pain, and abdominal cramping. These symptoms are a manifestation of hormonal and energetic imbalances that can be regulated with specific acupuncture points for painful periods.

Your acupuncturist first creates a diagnosis based on your symptoms, health history, and examination including pulse diagnosis. My clinical diagnostic techniques are based on 4 years of graduate-level training in addition to 10 years of experience in practice, during which I have treated hundreds of women with menstrual cramps and PMS. Over the years I have developed customized acupuncture treatment protocols for fast and effective relief from your hormonal symptoms and painful periods.

Acupuncture for Cramps

Can acupuncture help period cramps? Absolutely! Acupuncture works in many different ways, but one important mechanism of action is the regulation of muscle contraction. It helps modulate the contraction and relaxation phases of muscle fibers throughout the body, but in this case the muscles and ligaments of the uterus. Acupuncture excels at reducing muscle spasm, whether it be the lower back, upper back, or uterus.

Acupuncture for Heavy Periods

Irregular cycles and heavy bleeding are often treated successfully with acupuncture and natural herbal medicine. As practitioners, we can select acupuncture points that help regulate the hormonal cycle which contributes to the regularity of your period. Furthermore, acupuncture can regulate the blood flow to the uterus as well as affecting the uterine lining. The uterine lining should be thick and rich, but without clots or dark blood. Heavy bleeding with clots is a sign of the Chinese medicine pattern “Blood Stagnation” which is often accompanied by abdominal pain. This pattern is effectively treated through a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas.

Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common cause of painful periods. The pain and cramping can be debilitating, often causing women to miss work or be unable to do the activities that bring them joy. Endometriosis can also contribute to infertility, which we often treat as well. This 2017 Systematic Review found that several research studies demonstrated efficacy of acupuncture for treating endometriosis. My clinical experience is that acupuncture treatments can improve endometriosis pain very quickly, which is wonderful news for so many women who have not been able to find answers with conventional medicine. Typical treatments in western medicine include over-the-counter pain relief such as Ibuprofen and Motrin (NSAIDS), hormonal contraceptive pills, or hormone therapy. Many women find that these treatments are ineffective or create hormonal side effects such as weight gain, moodiness, and lack of sex drive.

On the other hand, acupuncture does not cause side effects and improves your sense of wellbeing. In fact, the majority of my patients report that their treatments improve other aspects of their health such as better sleep, reduced stress, more energy, and less pain.
